Today a hawk got in my run. .. i was loading presents in my truck lunchtime and glanced over at the run as i heard a commotion.. ran over and grabbed a stick and opened the run door and chased this hawk out. No chickens were hurt luckily Most of them ran in the coop. The stragglers were confused and panicking until i got there. Then they just stood there like idiots...

Holy cow. Unbelievable! Desperate hawk for sure. I've lost several hens to hawks over the years but the hens were free ranging. Snakes have been my #1 enemy. Nothing can stop them from getting into a pen. They cant get in the coops at night, total lockdown!

I was lucky. If i wasnt putting the packages in my truck i would have found dead birds after work. (I work from home)

Some people put a baby monitor or even cameras in their pens/coops. Now that's dedication lol, but I understand it in order to ID predators.

I can't believe that a hawk would be that stupid and get into an unknown covered area. Unreal!
I've had nothing yet thank G_d. The field around me is open. I would have to figure out how to manage that.

This little hawk has killed my hens before , it stays here year round and gets my neighbors birds and mine. Its a tiny hawk. Unfortunately there was an opening i didnt see . It couldnt get back out thru the breech though, as it couldnt see it due to the fencing. I had to open the kennel door to get it out.

I never even thought a little hawk would go after a chicken a lot bigger than itself. I imagine that I'll have some problem here, but hopefully spot hawks before anything is done. I hope none of them are as smart as your's thinks he is.

This one so far killed a silkie, 2 legbars, and a few barnyard mixes. My friend had a coopers hawk just kill her large hen i gave her 3 years ago:(. A friend of mine in rochester ny had one kill her bantam rooster the other day:(. They are easier to kill then rabbits and squirrels unfortunately and are easy meals.

I've lost 3 Barred Rocks and a Speckled Sussex to hawks, lost alot more to snakes though grrrrr. I havnt lost any chickens since I moved to Jax. There are plenty of owls, hawks and snakes in our neighborhood for sure. I've killed about a half dozen snakes in our yard so far. I trapped a family of coons at our last house. The cat lady next door said that the coons ate with the cats. One night there was a big fight outside our bedroom window and something banged real hard against the aluminum siding. This happened shortly after I got married and moved in with my wife. I asked my wife what was that noise, she said it was cats fighting with the coons! She said it happens all the time around there lol. Holy cow! Glad we moved!

Dawg id be pissed if my neighbor fed the cats and coons . Its crazy the noises they make when fighting. . Here we have this dam coopers hawk who never leaves. He chased away the red tail that was living in my pine trees(who never went after my or my neighbors chickens) . Ive been swooped at by the little hawk too at dusk by my shed a few times so it made me wonder if its a female and had babies near my shed.

We only have seen garter snakes in the yard. I know we have moccasin and rattler snakes in the woods here. But no big snakes have ventured out across the field to my yard

Some things I've heard of people deterring hawks is putting up a real looking fake owl on top of a post or something like that. It would have to be moved around each day, not stationary in one place. I've also read that stringing up a bunch of old CD discs around the yard deters hawks. I guess they twist around and their shinyness scares hawks, not sure. Since we dont have trees in our yard, I'd opt for the fake owl, but it's not necessary since my birds are penned all the time. Except when I let them out in the yard each afternoon, I watch them like a....hawk! (I know...corny at best lol.)

You need to encourage some crows to move into the neighborhood, they will move the hawk along

True. I've always had crows and 1 youngster taken by a hawk in 11 years. ME, I still can't get over your hawk in the pen! How weird!

Ive done the cds, tape, and i have a plastic owl that moves next to the pen.. after a while they figure out its not real. Im going to get an owl that flaps its wings and put it up by the pen. I had one that worked pretty good till its wings broke from the weather. I was shocked the hawk was in my run too.

We have crows here and they harass the hawks, I've seen them...so do the Blue Jays and Mockingbirds, squirrels barking and squealing at the hawks. I'm not worried, my birds dont free range

I put up 2 plastic owls, both move, so its a start. Next up is netting over the chicken wire roof to tangle any stupid predators. And im hanging fake tree branches for camouflage as well
