Looks like a storm blew branches and limbs down on your pen lol. The owl in the first pic looks real! Whatever it takes to deter hawks!

ME, in FloridA My pens had to be predator proof because they had no coop and didn't need it. Here they need a coop due to the weather, so I am thinking they are not going to be left out at night, and I can not have to build the fort knox of pens. But no big holes. You had a visit from one really stupid hawk. And his mother wasn't too bright as well!

The hawk is still around. But i have alot more fake plants as camouflage. The chickens dont go out unless im standing with them. Yeah karen i have a friend in SC and she has an open coop and run .

Today I did poor man's hawk deterrant. I had about 10 empty yellow shavings bags and hung them all around the chickens. My daughter will say "how ghetto'".

I feel very lucky not to have seen any hawks or anything other than canadian geese, vultures (they don't want anything alive so no worries), crows, a few grackles etc, nothing scary like hawks. I love your pen ME, it looks so "woodsy"

Yeah, I get that, I should do that too, find some fake plants, I don't need them like you do but I'm sure the girls would enjoy some plant life (or...silk/plastic plant life)

I watched a few videos on youtube last night about hawks and they had some interesting video where the hawk was actually all over the outside of a coop looking for an opening. Another one where a hawk was waiting on the coop roof for a chicken to come out (that did). You couldn't see it but the poor chicken was screaming for quite a while. I didn't know that hawks would put so much energy into nabbing a chicken. ME, your hawk fits into that category probably.
Powell claims he saw a large hawk here and I can't wait to see that. I have to put posts up but the ground is frozen.

Out here they sit and wait. A friend of mine 45 min away has them sitting on top of her coop roofs waiting... The big red tail hawk i had here never bothered the chickens. The little nasty cooper hawk chased the big hawk away and has caused issues for 2 years now with me and my neighbors chickens
