I just came home to find Henrietta, my olive egger , dead in the run. She laid an egg today for the first time in 2 months:( She is thin, her keel bone is protruding, i found some mites on her when i was examining her. She was fine last night and all the days up to now. She was around i dont know, maybe 8 or 9? She slowed down laying eggs this year. The last 2 eggs i got from her hatched 2 months ago ( my 13 chicks in the growout pen 2 are hers).
Im devastated. Im going to have a necropsy done to see what happened

I am so so sorry! You've gotten me choked up. I remember my Clarice laid an egg the day before she died. At 8-9 years old, I would think it's something that would not be rare in an older bird. But necropsies are great. They give you a good idea on the health of a whole flock. I think that's important
(Of course they never diagnosed my snake-head swallow roo correctly. But it wasn't one of my guesses either.

Sorry for your loss.I had a hen infested with lice and by the time I noticed she didn't weigh anything. That was 2 wks ago and she's still trying to recover. She may be anemic so try increasing iron and protein.Scramble eggs in an iron skillet.Cooking on iron increases the iron content of food and I'm sure you have eggs.

Im hoping the necropsy tells me what happened. At least i have 2 chicks from her that i hatched 7 weeks ago. They will be staying here.
When i bought her she was covered in mites, cost me $100 to treat. Then a few years later i had surgery done on her, another $250. She was a great hen with lots of personality. She came from being locked up and sold to living the good life with me . She was one of my favorites

You might want to think about supplemental tube feedings. Unless she's a good eater.

I'm sorry for your loss ME. Henrietta lived a long life, longer than most other chickens. Henrietta lives on in her 2 chicks, have comfort in knowing that. I dont like losing old hens neither.

Got an email from my vet this morning
Hi, there are still some tests pending at the state lab, but here is the most informative portion of the report:
Gross Necropsy Diagnoses: Larynx, trachea and infraorbital sinus: Laryngotracheitis and sinusitis, necrosuppurative, locally extensive, subacute to chronic, severe with larynx obstruction via exudate plug. Lungs: Congestion and edema, subacute, moderate; +/-pneumonia. Comments: Cause of death for this hen is a result of asphyxiation from the laryngeal obstruction/occlusion via exudate plug. The laryngotracheitis and sinus infection maybe of bacterial (e. g. Pasteurella, Avibacterium, Mycoplasma gallisepticum) and/or viral (e. g. ILT, IB, pox) origin; also consider concurrent/opportunistic tricnas. Fecal parasite analysis, histopathology of tissues and bacterial culture of the sinus and larynx are pending to determine cause of infection and other underlying disease. As a precautionary measure, PCR for Avian Influenza and New Castle Disease (AMPV-1) will be performed. Testing for ILT, IB and mycoplasma can be pursued at referral lab; please contact me if interested.
I would suggest we wait for the tests that they are already running before deciding if we need to look for ILT, IB and mcoplasma.
It is likely that the damage done to her sinuses by the previous infection set her up for future problems. It is recommended to watch closely for any signs of respiratory disdease in the remaining flock.
Dr. Schott
