Those are terrible low temps Sylie. I hope you have a good heating system in your house. When we had temps go below 27 degrees in SE Georgia, which was rare, I brought all my chickens in the garage overnight and let them out the next morning when the sun was up. The temps never lasted like that for no more than a couple of nights, then I'd boot the chickens out of the garage. BTW: I had them caged.

Going to virginia dawg. Nj property taxes are super high. Ny, nj and ca have thr highest property taxes. It really is ridiculous. My property taxes on .96 of an acre is $5600 a year... i have a tiny ranch compared to the huge houses in my neighborhood. the houses in VA we are looking at just to get an idea for when we are ready is $600-1200 a year in the roanoke area with more property. .

Wow, 5600 a year? holy smokes. We pay about 500 a year, of course, we have a 50 by 75 ft lot...So maybe I should just hush haha. So, we are in the middle of our 3 day freeze. At the moment it is -7 on it's way down to -20 (that's the real temp, the wind chill....right now is -26 and they say it could go as low as -45 tomorrow) I have a shop heater for the ducks and the chickens are in the upstairs of the coop with a heat lamp. It keeps the upstairs around 35 most of the time (my coop has an upstairs and a downstairs, they usually stay in the downstairs but the upstairs is much warmer). Thursday is supposed to be above zero though and then it goes up quickly the rest of the week and next week, there are a few days in the forecast to be in the 40's. We'll see!

ME. We lived in Virginia Beach, then Norfolk. We were there from 1958-1979. I've been through Roanoke many years ago. What I can remember of it was the beautiful land with hills just east of the Appalachian Mountains. Like I mentioned, that was a very long time ago. I'm sure it's a big city by now. When we lived there, taxes were high and seemed to go up every year. Virginia didnt give military residents a break on taxes at all. We were glad to move out of there. Virginia taxes everything except spit, at least it did back then. If you're a history buff, Virginia is the place you want to live. I can say there is excellent fishing on the coast and the Hampton Roads area has plenty of bridges/tunnels to drive over and under the water. The Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel is 17 miles long and I loved driving over it. The Virginia mountains are beautiful and fun to drive on secondary roads. Meh, it's all probably changed by now.

We have a half acre, house is 1635sq ft heated space. Property taxes are 1300 a year including sewage and storm water runoff treatment.
My house in Georgia was 1040sq ft total and yard was .75 acre. Taxes were $600 a year, but property taxes were going up every year, sometimes twice a year and electric and insurance was high. The same was true for vehicle property taxes. I still kick myself in the butt for not moving to Florida years ago...oh the money I couldve saved!

We will be closer to the mountains, in between roanoke and rocky mount. My hisband wants to be in the middle of his relatives , so somewhere in farmland, we dont want city as i want chickens and we will probably still have goats if we move in 5-7 years. Im not a city person and would be miserable in the city. I prefer farmland

Sylie i live in farmland so taxes are highrr as there are no big malls to take up the bulk of taxes. When i lived in bergen county nj 20 min from nyc property taxes were lower as the malls and stores on the highways took up the bulk of taxes. My parents house had a half acre corner lot and was a good size ranch and taxes were 3200 . Its insane the property taxes in nj. Ny is worse. Only way to get low taxes is to be a farm with over 6 acres as the state doesnt count the first acre and then they count the remaining 5 or more.but you have to apply for farm status if the property was never a farm and they are very strict about who gets farm.status

ME, I understand what you're saying. We live in Farmland too...although the town is growing every day, it's become more of a small city just in 2 years. But outside of town is all farmland. We don't have any malls per se, not here but 35 miles away is a bigger city and they have a couple of malls, not that it affects me but none the less...Anyway. So today was the coldest day I've ever experienced. -27 with a windchill of -43. Thankfully the shop heater helped the ducks stay in the upper 20's (above zero!) They didn't fully understand that even though it was warm in their run, it was waaaaaay cold outside and had a hissy fit every time I went out to check on them because I wouldn't let them out. Tomorrow is supposed to have a high of 10 above. That will feel like summer after the last couple of days.
I hope that you are all staying as warm as possible.

Wow, I thought my low yesterday of 0 and the high of 5 degrees was bad. But ME, I don't recall NJ ever being that cold! Ever! Sylie I've heard about your temps and never experienced them. But my SIL says when his lived in Minot, if it hit 35 people got out their shorts.
The water froze in the coop for the 2nd time. I think at zero, the coop stays above 25. That's pretty good for that radiator. My hands ached for the first time yesterday in the cold. I remember when I lived in NY, to go riding we would wear panty hose, 2 pair of socks, jeans sweater, coat and those snow sled pants with the suspenders. That made a big difference. I'll bet I could find a pair on ebay used in great shape for a few bucks.
The cold is a real challenge mostly being with the horse. She gets closed in and wears a winter coat, gets heated water, and lots of hay at night. Looks good in the morning. I would love to be outside building my 3 more doors, hanging gutters, moving chips, but it is just too cold. I'll see what I get accomplished a few days from now. Cant wait. Maybe I'll set up for it now.

Sylie, I think you get colder than I do. What was your low so far?
ME, I heard that you all in NJ got slammed with this polar thing and had some really bad temps. I even read that some woman somewhere got her eyelashes froze to her scarf!
I've filled up horse's 6 gallon water bucket this morning and hopefully that's it for today. I think today is the start of the temp rise over the next few days to 60 degrees. Heck, I'll get my shorts out. Good day to finally scour those water buckets.

Our lowest temp during the polar vortex was -27 (windchill -52) My brother in Minnesota said they had -40 with windchill -58 so I'm kinda glad that I don't live up there anymore! lol They have 3 dogs and the dogs wanted to go outside and wouldn't stop bugging around, knowing that they wouldn't like it, he opened the door and said "go ahead", one of the dogs stopped short at the door, turned around and hid under the couch, another went carefully onto the porch then came back in. The third went bounding out into the snow and played around for about 2 minutes then came racing back to the house as fast as he could and laid down in front of the fireplace hahahahaha!
