It looks like we are or have been in the same freezer. Things are not really looking up too much. Tomorrow is supposed to be 38 for a high which is shorts weather compared to what it's been like but we are going to pay for it with ice, sleet and freezing rain all day. After tomorrow we go back down into the deep freezer with single digits during the day and below zero at night. The ducks are getting sick of being inside. The chickens don't care but I think they are getting bored. They should be able to go out in the covered run tomorrow. The ducks may be able to go outside for a short period. I'm thinking about making the chickens some toys. I will have to do some figuring on how to make toys for the ducks with their wider bills. (chickens are easy, drill holes in a pop bottle, fill with treats, they roll it around to get the treats out) Maybe hide and seek with peas for the ducks, just put small bowls of peas in different spots in their enclosed run for them to find.

I remember living on LI NY and carrying buckets of water out careful not to slip on the ice or tromping through snow up to my knees. Horrible! Sylie, I'll do the foil thing. It's been 9-11 to 20 for the last several days. Today is supposed to be 40 and tomorrow 50. Then back to cold.
I am trying to set up things to be creatively easier.

Sem, The foil should work, I can't think of a reason it wouldn't. I hope it does.
We got the freezing rain today with ice pellets, everything is crunchy. Then this evening it started snowing, we are supposed to get 3-5 inches tonight, the rate it's going, I would guess we'll get the 5. We'll see. The ducks did get some time outdoors today, about 4 hours, they were very argumentative when I tried to get them back in their run lol. they have heat in their coop too. The chickens did get to go out in their run all day but didn't spend a lot of time out there, they chose to stay in the coop most of the day but the option was there and they did go out off an on. I think everything went well. I noticed last week that Sasha (chicken) had some white on her comb from mild frostbite so I kept them in the coop for a few days, I would have thought that they would be excited to go out in the run but I guess not lol. Anyway...It's about 28 right now and snowing like crazy, we have a winter weather warning until 9 a.m.
Everyone stay warm and dry!

We got the 5 inches plus, I'm not sure exactly how much "plus" there is but it's a good amount. I spent the day shoveling, the sun came out this afternoon but the "feels like" temp never reached 10 so all the birds stayed indoors. They are saying it's going to get very very cold over the next week. I hope they're wrong. I'm done with winter already.

Pouring rain, at least it's warm out. That's supposed to change the next few days, back into the freezer.

Wow Florida by you is getting slammed. Even my mother down by Tampa was complaining how cold it is (I didn't say anything, LOL). We had a high of 50 yesterday and will be 10 degrees by tomorrow morning.
ME, I hear ya with the 2x gloves. My hands have not really been an issue yet. I guess I'm either not out that long or working too hard. I still wear a lot of layers. The best investments I've made so far is Eddie Bauer down jackets (warmest lightest). $200+ jackets used but excellent condition for around $30. I have 3 now. Nothing like them. No feathers, just down. Wash and dry. I'm amazed at how light and warm they are.
I'm tired of this cold weather. If it weren't for the horse it might be okay.

Flooding in my run ugh. I need to move omg We dealt with a flooded yard most of last spring, I can relate. We were sick of it. The pens never flooded thanks to the gutters and truckloads of sand I previously added.

I had the gutter extension on. The rain came sideways . The run is covered top and sides but due to the high winds we cant completely cover it or the wind will lift it. Its bolted to heavy wood but the winds we get in the winter can move it. This morning everything is frozen

Wow!
It was 22 today. Yes, another day for a hat and gloves. Next week single digits at night. With the warm water I carry out for the horse, she decided to drink 10 gallons a day! That's alot of water to carry. I worked on the stall for hours thursday. And also made closures to bypass the snaps that freeze. I tried to unwind an extension cord today and it broke into pieces.

ME, do your chickens get out when it's cold?
Kentucky had a horse stuck in the mud up to his chest. He was pulled out and safe.

Mine can go out if they want, they dont mind the cold as long as the wind isnt blowing. We have had horrible winds so they refuse to go in the yard.

Ever since I've owned chickens, that's one of the first things I've noticed...when it's windy, all my chickens have been skittish and usually hunker down under the coop. I figure the wind messes with their senses, particularly hearing and eyesight not being able to detect a predator as keenly if there wasnt any wind at all. I think dogs are the same way; not used to seeing tree branches swaying in the wind, loose trash blowing around in the yard, bushes moving in the wind etc... Come to think of it, I dont care for it neither. BUT it has its purpose; like bringing in fresh clean air, needed rain, snow, cold or warm air etc. If there were no wind, this would be a dead planet, the planet Mercury is a good example.

I'm not crazy about the wind. I have yellow plastic shaving bags hung on the fences around the chickens that blow in the breeze and it didn't faze them. They all had a good time yesterday outside. And I can't believe how warm the coop stays with the heat. Usually 40-50 when we're in the 20's.

I like the wind except in winter, I'm not fond of cold (yet I grew up in Minnesota and now live in Iowa...go figure). Weather here is ridiculous. I can't even give you a forecast lol at the moment it is 20 degrees, snowing and the temp will rise through the night to 36 until about 3a.m. when it will drop like a stone and tomorrow will be cold again. On Wednesday our high is supposed to be -17 for a high and -27 for a low with a windchill in the area of -50. The bright side is that Friday it will be back in the 20's and continue going up from there, for a week at least, the temps will be reasonable and the ducks and chickens can go out! They will be so very happy!
