The wet hay and mud will smell like pig slop if you leave it too long lol .
Try to get sand for those areas

Finally can look outside, and the last of the snow (which started back in mid November, before I had my first egg here) was finally all melted as of yesterday morning. Temps had gone up, and we had heavy rain, and so it went away... What a bunch of mud pies! Yesterday a portion of the run was, well, serious mud. The chickens will be getting sand, I have to find it in my garage...
This morning, the mud has frozen.

Looks like it may warm up a bit this week. I'm beyond caring.

Snow!! The one thing i truly love is snow on Christmas. It just makes it so much more magical. We got about an inch this morning. Its going to be 40 today so its going to melt, but it makes it feel more christmassy now.

How pretty! I had some frost this morning.
I found this website that tree trimmers can dump wood chips on your specified area for free. You can continue to get them if you want. So I added my name to the list and will wait to find a pile of wood chips over by my barn. That's better than paying for them.
ME, old hay is not the preferred solution. But there are some real slick spots like in front of her door where something needed to be done. I would love limestone or gravel but a truck would sink into the yard and never get out.Maybe in the summer. I could have some dumped and hire some guys to move it .
Yesterday I decided to put 3 posts in for some fencing. It took me 3 hours. Mud, hard ground, then ice about 18 inches down, then water. It was easier to dig a hole with a shovel than with the post hole digger. It was horrible. Then I backfilled the slop, and now have to wait for it to stabilize- hopefully. I have never seen ground like this. I dread thinking of the fencing for the chickens. I think I may hire a handyman for that too. Just can't do it all myself anymore.

At least the old hay will get good for the garden if you use it. Wood chips are the way to go, but for now use the hay

We have 57 at midnight right now. Tomorrow 60 then 29 at night . I never know what to wear here. So I do dress or have layers available.. it's crazy. I'm trying to get used to it but nothing beats florida with just wearing t shirts and knee length pants every day. Didn't own any socks either.
I ended up going to ebay and buying 3 Eddie Bauer goose down coats. I bought one and I was really impressed. Says it's the lightest warmest coat i'll ever own and IT IS! I am amazed. So i'm getting nice used coats for about $30 when they originally cost $150 and up! They are light as a feather and super warm.

Tree trimmers will come and dump their truckload at your specified spot, no call, just dump it. Can't wait for free wood chips. I will do a foot or 2 thick-honestly. I got my gutters here to put up . That should help. I have an acre. The horse will churn up 1/3 of that to one side. My daughter keeps at me about not letting grassy areas get trampled. But I say I have the other 2/3 all grass. Who cares? Big lawns to me are like art. I have a big lawn. The horse can have a big chunk of that and not make much of a difference. I need her feet out of the mud.

We're supposed to hit 60 on Monday. It's great for my electric bill and the coop heat but the horse is standing in mud. Maybe I should keep her in a stall for half a day as well. The mud swallows her feet up to her ankles. I may have to think about boarding if I can't improve this.

Been in the low 80's here with early morning fog, then clears out to be a very nice day. I'm going fishing at the beach tomorrow morning before a cool down this weekend. The water temp is in the low 60's and it might be slow fishing, we'll see.

Everything here is soaked. Part of my horse "barn" as well. Even with big cracks in the concrete floor. I get about 2 inches of water of rain at a time on top of saturated everything. Not happy.
