Hello I live in Texas with my flock of English Orpingtons. We’ve been on many coop tours and even got to be in the Coop Dreams tv show which was very exciting. We also have a little Facebook group called Feathers and Friends that I share pictures of my flock and other chickeny things we find. I have been following several members in here over the years and on BYC and followed everyone to the last few forums so glad to be here and still get the help and support from such a wonderful group. I now have Mareks and everyone that I’ve talked to has helped me so much with that. We are down to 6 birds and trying to hang in there!

I only have 1 Orp and she dislikes the heat intensely - I would too with all those feathers

It’s been really challenging. I use frozen water bottles inside water containers to keep the water cool. Lots of fruit and electrolytes to keep them hydrated. They also have fans, a swamp cooler and lots of covered areas they can get under. They really like the swamp cooler they stay around that during the peak afternoon temps.

What is the swamp cooler?

A swamp cooler is sort of like an air conditioner except that it uses watered down material of some form (depends on who makes it as to what material) with a fan blowing on it to cool the air. It is also called an evaporative cooler. Have you seen those tiny little boxes at Wal Mart called "Arctic Air"? they are 40 dollars and are in the "As Seen On TV" section...that is a miniature, personal swamp cooler. (don't buy an Arctic Air, massive waste of money, they are very flawed, leak and only cool the air about 3 inches in front of it)
There are tons of videos and instructions online for making one yourself. I've considered it for my girls but haven't done it yet, I just put frozen water bottles in front of their fan, they do fine with that. Although if I made one like the one I saw online out of a 5 gallon bucket with holes drilled in the sides....it would cool the whole area instead of just the area directly in front...hmmm....now that I'm thinking about it, I'm going to have to work on that this winter so I'm ready for next summer...

The real name is evaporative cooler and we got ours at Lowe’s hardware store. Sure has helped a lot when it gets hot if your in dry conditions. On humid days it doesn’t work as well. Maryellen so glad you joined my little group!! I have fun sharing my chicken pictures with friends so I started it a few years ago. I’m also an admin for a group in the UK called “Chickens as Pets” they are a secret group so hard to find them on FB but they have 8000+ members and it’s nice to get their perspective over across the pond. I’ve been doing that for about 3 years now.
