Hi all - looking for advice. One of my hens had a bumble, I was able to remove the scab, get the pus out and wrap - looked good. This was a few weeks back. She developed a limp on the same foot. There is no scab, no sign of injury. The foot pad is hot, swollen and tense. I had her on Tribressen for 10 days, Epsom salt soaks etc. Marginal improvement. Today the foot is swollen again and hot, still no sign of a bumble or injury. I have her back on Epsom salt baths - I am considering Amoxicillin as an antibiotic - will it work - is there something better?? TIA, sue

Sue, it'll have to be amoxicillin given to her for two weeks if it's not too late. Once staph infection gets to the legbone, it quickly spreads throughout the system, then death occurs. Doxycycline or Cipro would be better, but you'd need a prescription from a vet.

Did you get the kernel out? If not feel to see if there's a kernel in there.

Did you get the kernel out? If not feel to see if there's a kernel in there. I was thinking that perhaps she didnt get all the infection out initially. Or bacteria managed to get into the wound after the surgery, like the hen stepping in a puddle or something.

In the past, instead of soaking I put Magnapaste (Epsom salt paste for horse foot issues) on their foot and bandage it before they go to bed. So it's like getting an all night soak. Either way, I think soaking it is the right thing to do.

Two 250mg tablets per day until healed, one in the morning, one in the afternoon. Or one 500mg tablet per day until healed. It might take a couple of weeks if it hasnt spread already.
