Red and black broiler chickens adjusting to their chicken tractor. At any rate, this gallery will feature both the broilers and the laying birds. A great idea!! Attachments:

I can't seem to add text to my post after I put the photos in. So here we are: the first two photos of the last post are of the layers right after being placed in the coop... actually at the end of the day when they realized this was Home. The last photo is one of the two buckeye pullets about a week before. They may not lay as prolific, but they are winter hardy, and I will be getting plenty of eggs! The photo below is Goldilocks, the lone golden-laced Wyandotte, photo taken when the buckeye photo happened.

Photo from the 26th, I don't always go to the coop ready with a camera. The Wyandotte stepping out is Tiny Dancer - she or he was the litter runt but this one also has the most white. The bird has caught up in size, though. (There's also a leg band, which some of the other birds have kicked off.) You can see all three buff Orpingtons: Eowyn, Fimbrethil (Fim) and Idril. Idril is the most friendly of a friendly lot of Orpingtons. One of the two black Australorpes (both friendly) and one of the two Buckeyes also put in an appearance. The Buckeyes are docile but stand-offish. Click on the picture to enlarge!!!

I have all the LoTR movies (early ones in VCR but re-bought in DVD). I love the soundtrack for the first Hobbit movie, mainly for that Dwarves song. I have all the books too, including Silmarillion (hence, Idril).

Some current pics (as of July 9th). Broilers on pasture They love it, and come back to their tractor when they think I have grain for them. I'm attempting to have them mostly forage, with some kitchen scraps and weeds I've pulled, and a few mealworms hither and yon. Most of their grain is something they get for their dinner. They're guided by their stomachs!

Thanks. Sorry for the delay in update. 7 broilers met the freezer (actually just the fridge) on September 30th. The 8th was spared due to her overwhelming friendliness.
Turned out there were five of us, and we first went over to dispatch 7 drakes at a neighbor's. I'm glad I got to pluck and eviscerate those first - they're a lot harder than chickens to do. I did not dispatch any ducks. I don't plan to have any, and so didn't feel the need to learn that step when it comes to ducks.
Then we all came to my place. The one guy dispatched six birds, and I dispatched the last of mine.
We were sort of out of view, but not entirely, of the chicken coup for the layers, but their rooster was... watching. The hens had no concern, even the broiler I'd rescued, although she did glimpse once or twice from what I could tell.
He was never particularly friendly anyway, but he won't come close to me at all now. If I ever have to medicate him, it will be interesting.
If nothing else, knowing how to do the deed myself means if some animal is seriously injured and needs to be put down immediately... I know I can do it, and I can make it as painless as possible.

Here are a couple photos of the layers / roo. Tiny Dancer is the Wyandotte rooster. He was the smallest chick when I got this batch, and I was surprised he turned out to be the roo. (Yes, I'd ordered one roo for my girls.) The other photo is everyone waiting for me to bring more food... and let them out to roam a bit... The big one off to the right is Celeste, the black broiler rescue. Tiny Dancer is below her, in the doorway. The last photo... well, the hen in my broiler group had eggs! I didn't know that. The egg to the top is hers (not laid, as we discovered when we eviscerated), the left egg came from another farmer and was born. The batch of yolk things are my broiler hen's planned eggs. And later on, I found out she'd actually laid one... which I didn't find until it was past its "sell by" date or whatever I want to call that.
