Good morning fellow Breda addicts, Thought I would start a board just for Breda fowl so we can all keep track of who's doing what and where. Glad to see Chickendanz & Sylvester join us I have started the Breda coop (finally) and hope to have it finished within a week or so. Then to build the compound area, so I hope to move my ladies and Chickendanzs' roo in together. The chicks are coming along nicely, about 2 months old now, starting to play at the pecking order. They will join the others when they are big enough.

Breda profile The Breda fowl has been around since around 1600. Although argument exists as to it's origins, the majority seem to favor Holland as it's home - the town of Breda to be exact. It is a composite breed, but no records of the cross breedings exist. It is called Kraaikops in Holland, this translates as 'crow head' and the head of the Breda does indeed resemble the head of a crow. It was once popular in the US around the time of the Civil War - at that time it was known as the Guelder fowl, or plain Gelders. It gradually died out, mainly due to competition from faster growing breeds. It is a striking and unusual bird to look at.They are tall, stately and regal in demeanor - a large gentle and calm bird. They are friendly and curious but don't like to be handled too much. The head id large with a very stout beak with large nostrils. Neither sex has a comb, perhaps a small tuft of feathers and that's it. Wattles on the hens are small or non-existent. They also have feathered legs and vulture hocks, all of which add to the overall portrait of a regal bird. The are reasonable/good layers of medium/large white eggs. This bird is a slow grower, taking a while to mature. Sexing the chicks is an art(!) although watching them sort out the pecking order can give you a pretty good idea. Colors available are: black, blue, splash, cuckoo and mottled. White is extremely rare. The Breda also comes in bantam size although I don't know of anyone with them currently. www.aviculture-europe.nl/nummers/15E02A05.pdf

Yea, I keep having to send them to "paint" and resize them. But I think Dawg has a way of doing it on the pc without sending it anywhere. It stinks. My other two laptops are tablets. I should get the app for one.
