It has been a while since I posted here, but I do have a serious question. I had to remove the Wyandotte rooster that lived with my hens - he'd gotten seriously attack-oriented towards me, and also was starting to ride his hens extremely hard, with major feather loss. I had purchased some cockerels of heritage breeds (for meat, yes) last May, and want to substitute one of them in for the late but unlamented rooster. I do know that individuals within breeds are going to be individual - but I just want a general opinion on this. I hope to substitute this cockerel in, within a couple of weeks. The breeds I have: - Speckled Sussex
- Welsummer
- Barred Rock
Which one might work best?
(Just to note, the hens I have are: black Australorpe, Buff Orpington, Buckeye, Rhode Island white, and Silver-laced Wyandotte. Nine hens in total.)
Thanks in advance!

Hi Artemis - how are you doing?I think the best roo is likely to be the Welsummer, then probably the Barred Rock. I currently have a Wellie roo and he is great with the girls and me, very gentle and will eat from my hand. I had a speckled Sussex and he went into the pot, meanest sob ever!! Never had a BR roo, but they are said to be very gentle...
