Okay so, I haven't been able to catch the chick doing it but I get a tiny, bantam sized egg from one of them every single day for the last 11 days. Let me back up just a bit. The first time I got any eggs at all from the chicks was Mid June. I got a tiny egg and 2 regular (smallish but closer to regular sized) but one of the regular sized was shell less. Since then, I've gotten only tiny bantam sized eggs and only 1 per day. I don't know who is laying it nor why they would be perfect in every way except the size. No other eggs from the chick pen. It's so curious.
I did a little research today and could not find any articles on a standard sized chicken laying bantam sized eggs. The only thing I can come up with is that its one of the JG's and they are not standard size? They are all still "teenager" sized but the JG's are the same size as the wyandottes. So I got curious about the idea of a bantam JG. Kind of an oxymoron but there is actually such a thing. The APA has them listed as an accepted breed. (although the only accepted colors are black and white, my chicks are blue). From what I understand of my research the APA listed them more as a "future possibility" rather than a current standard.
And what of these tiny eggs I keep getting? I understand irregular and small eggs are normal for a newly laying pullet but every single day, the same sized egg for 10 days or more? I just don't get it.
Technically speaking, all 4 of the chicks are too big to be classified as bantams but in the case of a Jersey Giant, wouldn't being bantam make them standard sized? Just theorizing. There is little to no information about bantam JG's.
I'm just pondering things, if anyone knows why I'm getting one bantam sized egg per day from standard sized chickens and no other eggs at all, I would love to hear about it.

Im getting bantam sized eggs from 8 pullets who started laying last month. I notice it takes a few months for the pullets to lay larger eggs. Jersey giants dont lay jumbo or xl eggs, they usually lay regular size eggs after a few months

Weird, none of my other chickens have ever laid bantam sized for this long. I won't worry then. I'll just keep collecting these miniature eggs hehe I'm blowing them out and washing them inside and out then come easter I'll decorate them and make an easter garland out of them. I sure wish I could catch whomever it is that is laying them. I get one every day but have yet to catch them in the act. I can't even be sure it's one of the JG's. It is totally possible it's a wyandotte.

ME is right. The eggs may start small but end up big. I love Jerseys.

I love mine too, Tanji is the boss of the mini flock and my gardening pal. She loves to be with me in the garden, she always stays close to me and munches on the weeds. The others just go about their own business on the other end of the garden. When I leave the garden to get water or for whatever reason, she just follows me around wherever I go lol. Today she had an altercation with the "big boss". They ended up face to face, wings out, talons flying, I had to use a small board to get in between them before they could hurt each other. Tanji may still be small but she has big guts. Checkerboard is a force to be reckoned with.
How long would you say until I get regular sized eggs from her? (she's the only chick laying right now) She's been putting out these small eggs for awhile now. (since mid June or something like that).
All of my other chickens only laid a couple small ones before they got to be standard size. This is new to me for them to be this small for this long.

The JG eggs are still small but not bantam size anymore. The JG's themselves are still small (for JG's) They are slightly smaller than my wyandottes of the Same age but I heard somewhere that they don't get 100% full size until after a year old, is that true? Do I still have hope of giant chickens running around my yard or are mine some sort of freaks of nature and will be the same size as the other chickens forever?

From what I understand they are s-l-o-w growers, so don't give up hope yet My Welsummer/RIR pullets should be nearing POL soon, just as well I don't think my Wellie roo is going to make it past the winter...

I haven't given up yet, just anxious to see giant birds lol. I have heard slow growers and I've heard fast so I wasn't sure. What's wrong with your roo?

Found him down a ffew weeks back, separated him and gave him tlc and special treatment. He has improved, he can now stand, but he has a bit of trouble walking. I have treated him for just about everything including favus. He's just not himself and cannot get up on the perch at night.

I'm glad to hear that he is better but yeah, if you can get a hold of ME she may know something. I think she is on the old site now and then too, I've seen her post on occasion through the summer. I haven't seen anyone here all summer long except for you lol. Does he have interest in perching or doing the things the others are doing? Like, does he watch them and appear to want to go out walking but just can't? Let me know if you find something out.
