Yeah, chicken math attacked me from behind and dumped 4 new chicks in my lap. I'm at capacity now so chicken math will have to find another victim from now on. Technically I'm over capacity as far as available space and I'm at 9/10 birds allowed by the city. I have to figure out how I'm going to house these birds now. Dang chicken math! I got 2 Jersey Giants (gray day olds) and 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes. I'll try to get pics of them tomorrow.

Good for you! We're only allowed 5. At one time we had 12, down to 7 currently. Dont worry, I know you'll find a way to house them...experienced chicken keepers always do!!!

So in both pictures you can see the Wyandotte with the one solid black stripe down her back, that's Ann, the other one is Dot. The Jersey's still don't have names, my daughter has decided she wants to name them but hasn't thought of anything she wants to call them yet. Dot is WHINEY! omg she cries over the smallest thing. The other's won't play with her, it's too hot in the brooder (80 is too hot for these guys even at 3 days old), the brooder is too cold (75 is too cold....), the others are sleeping and she wants to play, there's a single pine shaving in the hole she wants to eat out of, omg *smh*

Well if some chickens look alike, it's pretty easy to "count" the right number! I lived in a no rooster area and ended up with 9 roosters. 2 ended up leaving because they crowed 24/7.
Chicken math has bitten me too. I want Houdan pullets. McMc has them this week but I would need to get 30. In spring they have none available. Other hatcheries only offer straight run.

30? Thats crazy. How can they expect people to buy that many. Cant they sell like 10 or 12 like other hatcheries do?

30, yeah that's ridiculous. Seriously, other than big farms and commercial places, who orders 30 at a time?
I had to return one of the Jersey's today. It had thick legs and almost no wing feathers at 4 days old compared to the others with skinny legs and pronounced wing feathers...that says roo to me so I took it back and exchanged it for one with more wing feathers. It really does surprise me that they put people in charge of chicks that know NOTHING about chickens. The guy I talked to was very kind and accommodating but had no idea that males and females develop at different rates. He has never had chickens but has thought about getting some. I told him to get a hold of me if he decides to and I'd help him get started. I would not want him to just grab a handful of chicks and think he can just toss them in the yard and call it good. He didn't even know what straight run meant! He didn't even have heat lamps turned on for the chicks, they were all huddled up in a pile peeping like crazy. I told him they were cold and he needed to turn their lamp on. He did but holy cow.

Make sure you make allowances in the coop for the fact that JG are BIG. They need larger nest boxes, lower perches etc.

JGs are twice the size of large hens(if you got the true jersey giants) they grow slow but huge

Make sure you make allowances in the coop for the fact that JG are BIG. They need larger nest boxes, lower perches etc. Yep, I've done my research, like a good chicken momma lol! I am building a smaller coop for the ducks to move into so that these 4 can have the great big coop, the only thing I'll have to do is cut the door into the coop part bigger for the JG's, make a new door etc. I don't need another gigantic coop in my yard lol the ducks don't roost so it doesn't have to be high in height and they spend most of their time in the fenced in yard so I don't need to worry about a spacious run, just something big enough for the winter days when it's too cold for them to be out in the yard. The coop/run that is currently the duck's was originally for quail or something, the house is quite large, it only has 2 nest boxes but I can put in 2 more and still have plenty of space. The attached run is 6ft wide by 10 ft long and I can expand it if necessary but I am hoping they will all be fine in what is there, if they are unhappy, I'll do what needs doing but at this point, making the ducks a smaller coop and pen is the right thing to do. Plus, they will all be "free range" in the yard a good share of the day anyway in spring/summer/fall and warmer days in winter. OH and the current duck coop/run is 6 ft tall so there should be plenty of roosting space should they choose to do that. (my other chickens have never wanted to roost no matter what I did)

First I had 3 hatchery Jerseys. One immediately jumped on my arm. That was Mariska. They all looked identical except for a few tells: Mariska had a habit of pecking the back of my pants to say hello. Henrietta had a kind of more stern expression, and Charlene was one with those melt-you eyes.
Sylie you are not alone. I was looking for female Houdan hatchery chicks shipped after April 1st (15 chick minimum) and there weren't any. In fact mcmc was the only one who sold Females. They had none. I kept checking back and OMG! They added females on my birthday! But 30 chick minimum. So I got mine for May 10. I feel like it was a miracle to find added Houdan females. So I ordered 6 Houdans, 6BR and 3BO and will have to sell some.
I guess all in all the driving factors were how bad I felt for having a Houdan disappear, and getting chicks makes me feel like I'll have another 10 years to take care of them and enjoy them.
