I have a duck that lays shell less eggs regularly, this is no surprise and since shes been doing it her whole life, does not concern me. What concerns me is that tonight I accidentally startled her and a shell less egg popped out with some sort of tube attached to the large end, it was secreting some white goop and there was a puddle of white goop on the ground as if she had pooped. I have pictures of it on my phone but for whatever reason, I cannot get the pictures onto this forum. She seems completely fine, as of bedtime when I put them in their coop for the night. When I gently squeezed the egg, the tube got fatter but nothing came out the open end almost like there was a plug in the open end or something. Then, I squeezed a bit too hard and broke the egg which was okay because then I got a good look at the inside of it which looked totally normal. The yolk was a good orange color, there was a normal amount of white, the yolk was a good size in ratio to the white for a duck. It did not smell funny (neither the egg nor the white goop), nothing has changed in her diet or environment unless she's digging up stuff in the yard that I'm not aware of. I don't understand the white tube and white goop. The white goop is the consistency of elmer's school glue and looks a lot like it. (maybe this is where they get the glue!! from weird ducks) oh and the entire egg was coated in a thin layer of the white goop which is abnormal, usually her eggs are just...shell less eggs.
I am hoping that I don't find her dead in the morning. Cross your fingers!!
UPDATE: It is morning and she seems perfectly fine, still quacking constantly, running around acting like she always does. There does not seem to be any ill effects. I will be keeping a closer than usual, eye on her for a few days but maybe it was just a weird thing that happened.
I did think of something though...because she has always had weird eggs, it's obvious that her reproductive system isn't right, I wonder if she didn't just make too much membrane for the amount of white and yolk she produced for that particular egg? And maybe the white goop is actually really really watered down calcium that was meant to be a shell? Just a thought anyway.
