Since I ordered 3 Light Brahma chicks, I started building a new coop. It will be 3'W x 6'L. I've already bought all the materials except for the plywood for the coop itself. I've already covered the top of the pen with underlayment and placed a sheet of plywood on top and covered it with a 10x12 tarp. This morning I put the 4x4 posts in the ground. I'll start with the 2x4's for the coop later next week after I haul in some sand. It was just too hot to continue working outside. I gave the BR's and the Brat Pack a container each of ice water to drink...heavy on the ice. Here's a few pics: I also installed a screen door separating the Brat Pack from the new chicks. It's kind of tough to see the four 4x4 posts I put in the ground, but they are there. Also the new overhead roof.

OMG! You're getting 3 more chicks? Brahmas? How nice!
Sometimes I wonder what's more fun (honestly), the chickens or the building fixing, improving, building, etc?

I like the improving and building...but not the fixing...a pain in the neck. That means I gotta tear my work apart and do it all over again grrrr. I "try" to get it right the first time but since I'm not a carpenter, there's been aggravating times I've had to tear everything down and start over. A total waste of time. GRRR! I'm going fishing tomorrow before the new chicks arrive. They should be here between Tuesday and Thursday. Last time they arrived on a Wednesday back in April earlier this year.

Jim, due to carpal tunnel, I have used screws for years. Easy to put up and take down. And screws are reusable unless you strip them like me. Maybe give that a shot. I have no answer for putting up wire. The terrible thing I do is just snip the wires along the posts.
I do love screws. If you screw it up, you can unscrew it!

I use screws and nails. Putting up chicken wire or hardware cloth isnt a problem, just abit time consuming and no issues there...well except maybe my arms looking like Freddy Krueger got ahold of them LOL.

For chicken wire and hardware cloth I use 1 1/2 inch staples.

Unfortunately I had to rearrange the 4x4 posts I put in the ground last week for the new coop, space was an issue. Today I'm framing the new coop. I've already run power out to the pen so I'm ready to get to work. If I have time, I'll get plywood later today or tomorrow.

These projects are always slowed down by unexpected small stuff where 10 minutes becomes hours. Have fun!

I've got the new coop framed and ready for the plywood which I purchased this afternoon. I'm going to paint the plywood first though. Here's pics of the coop, work in progress: That piece of lattice hanging on the fence, ignore it. I put it there because I had no other place to put it lol. Attachments:

Lattice looks good!
I think my property has a red shed that makes a good coop. I don't want it too big so when it gets cold they won't have to heat up this big shed. It's funny, a shed needs only a few things, chicken doors, roosts, no major remodel. I think I'll eventually be needing sand like you, Jim.

Did you notice the utility deep sink I installed in the pen in the above pic? Yep, no more carrying 3 gallon waterers long distance lol. I bought five 4x8 sheets of plywood and painted them on both sides this weekend. I'll be working in the the pen Tuesday and Wednesday putting it all together; including the nitnoid things like installing the doors, vents, roosts nest boxes etc...

It's still hot here and I stop working on the new coop by noon time each day. I have to install the roof, one side, and the front portion. The floor, one side and the rear portion are completed. I didnt get any of the vents cut out. I spent this morning correcting mistakes, then caulking. I'm done working on it for now and hopefully I'll finish the coop next week. It's starting to shape up and looking like a decent coop.

I had to work on it today due to the possible tropical storm/hurricane coming in from the Gulf of Mexico in a few days. I'm about 70% complete, seems I still got a ways to go. I got the vents installed with hardware cloth and screen, it was time consuming. I also got one side up and caulked. Tomorrow the roof gets put on, then a roost and fan installed. Then I'll still have to build frames for the doors and that will be time consuming. I dont know if I can get front of the coop done tomorrow of not. Here's some pics from todays work:

The Light Brahma chicks are growing fast. This week they'll already be one month old. Two of them like to hop up in Sharon's hand. They like to peck my hand, pecking the hand that feeds them! Hmmm.

I got the roof on, roost installed, fan installed and it works great, more caulking. Two more days ought to finish it up. I have to build 2 door frames, install hinges and other nitnoid stuff, build a ramp also. I have to fix the nest box in the coop and make another one. I'll be glad when this project is over with.
