I need a new lap top. This one keeps crashing and doing other things and George,a Quaker Parrot, removed several buttons over the last 2.5 yrs. So,I have to keep reloading and correcting the missed/doubled letters (they either miss altogether or double)and I can only put up with it for short periods of time before I start cussing George out and feel like throwing it across the room.Like I have mentioned before,I'm really stupid when it comes to technology,I don't get along with smart phones or touch screens and have no clue what to look for (except more than 2 whatever in memory like I have now).Back to school time is suppose to be the best time to buy a lap top so I'm going to start looking but have no idea what to really look for.Everybody around me does only phones and have no suggestions for a lap top.I don't do much on it,so I don't need the latest, super duper lap top but I was wondering if any of you all had any suggestions what I should look for.If you were in the market for a lap top, what would you look for?Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.TIA

I wish I could help you, but I'm computer illiterate. My laptop is a Dell and I've had it for a long time. My computer guy wants me to upgrade to Windows 10 and says he could make it similar to Windows 7. I might do that next year, not sure. My wife has a new laptop. She was having alot of problems with her HP laptop and bought a Dell with Windows 10. I dont like it because it's touch screen. Not good if you're snacking on Cheetos or leftover ribs. Dont buy a Toshiba laptop. I burned that one it made me so mad, took almost a gallon of gas to do it...grrrr.

Just lost my whole post.
Put your money into 1. Processor speed. I buy Pentium 5 or 7 for speed. 12-13 inch is fine. I stick to brands that are easy to resell. You can get a key protector which is a plastic cover with the keys molded into it. And be sure to get the higher resolution. If it's higher it's clearer. The low resolutions hurt my eyes..Windows 10 has some quirks but it has it's pluses too. So that's what I have. Most laptops don't come with a cd player anymore. They are big on those flashdrives that you can carry on your keychain. Touchscreen is fine because you don't have to use it. I love my Samsung tablet. It's fast. I also have a keyboard for it. It's much less disappointing. The samsungs are harder to find now because IMO they don't go bad often enough, LOL.

Thanks,Sem,I wrote that down.I was happy with this one, except for no memory.I didn't expect to use it as much as I do and need something better, especially to down load pdf's(I think that's the right phrase)that most gov documents are. There's research to be done.I didn't know they had key board protectors, either. That will be bought with it.I know what you mean about losing a whole post.CF saved as draft after you stared posting,I liked that. Can we (and I mean someone but me LOL)do that on here?Every time this one crashes,I lose everything and have to start all over.I can't even shop anymore(much to Dale's delight)...

There's 2 storage capacity numbers. One is for how much is remembered quickly. The other is for how much storage the laptop has. The RAM is the fast storage. With a faster processor you usually get a higher RAM (fast memory). The other storage should be at least 500 gb which is plenty of room for pics.

I think I found one. It's a Lenovo w/ 15.6" screen and intel core i3 w/ 8GB memory,1TB hard drive.Normal resolution, though.I researched the difference between Pentium and intel core and the intel core had the most votes but they also have intel core 5 and 7 and I'm not sure what that means, newer versions?, but the i3 had good reviews.I may go check it out today.I've been wanting to go to the fish store and get a new plecostimus for a 2 months now, anyway, and both places are close to each other.I had to rehome the last one when he got too big for my tank and I've been having to do his job of keeping the glass algae free.

i3 is going to be noticeably slower than i5 or i7. I have an i5 right now. I don't buy anything but intel Pentium (icore) because I end up returning them for lack of speed. DO not buy that lower resolution. You don't need 1 tb of storage. 500gb will never get filled, LOL. You can also get 6 gb RAM. That should give you money to put into an i5 with better resolution.

Karen, what laptop brand do you recommend with all the things you recommend, particularly with speed? I know you have a Samsung tablet, a tablet wouldnt be good for me, probably not CQ neither.

I love my Samsung tablet. I have a 9 inch and a 12 inch.
Computer brands? I personally think they're all the same, LOL. It's what you put in it. I've probably have one of every brand. I have a Dell, but my next would be an HP- just because. and I think of what brands are easiest to sell.
compare processors. the i5 is fast enough. Right now I have an intel core i5. I like RAM on the high side and regular memory about 500- i'll never fill that up! the regular/lower grade resolution hurts my eyes.

So, are you saying that all these things have to be added to a laptop, or is there a laptop that already has that stuff in it that can be bought directly off the shelf? I'm not computer savvy lol.

I went ahead and bought the Lenovo. It was on sale for a really good price.I looked at hundreds(if not thousands)Of course, the sales guy tried to steer me to another more expensive one but I wasn't going to spend a lot of money on something my birds can tear up or that would be obsolete when the power grid goes down.He looked at me like I was crazy.LOL The buttons are bigger but setting it up is driving me crazy.I kept trying to get the book marks from the old to new and couldn't do it or even put them in manually. This is windows 10 and I still can't do one, much less ten.I finally figured out I had to download Mozilla and everything came up.D'uh!!!Only took me a day and a half to figure it out but I figured it out by myself. It was a proud moment...... PS-I have a RAINBOW key protector on the way.You didn't say they came in pastel colors and I was surprised. It'll be nice to look at instead of the silver/gray that the laptop is.

Great news CQ! The solid state storage is very fast. I just listed those 3 as a guideline to what I'd be looking for. Glad you found one!
