With some chickens I know they're suffering too much and need help to end their suffering. But others seem to waste away but look content and it's hard to tell whether it's best to euthanize them or let them die on their own terms. I've just had 2 who have gotten really old, then wasted away and died. They still looked to me like they were good with being there, not huddled in a corner with their eyes closed. They died on their own. It's a tough call. Are chickens mentally wired to die on their own or is it really humane to euthanize?

If I see and know a bird is suffering, I will cull. However I let otherwise "healthy" old birds live out their lives. All living creatures eventually die with or without human intervention. Tough call like you said Karen.
