So last year i sold 2 silkie mixes to a person i thought would care great for them. I got one back thursday night after trying for months when i saw the conditions of the birds he had stacked in dog crates in his garage. No food, no water, injured birds just laying there..i kept trying for months but didnt see them in his yard so i thought they both died. Needless to say im beyond upset. I will not sell or give any more birds to anyone again. I dont know if she will make it or not. The other one died he said. No clue when. Here is a pic of both of them when i had them . See how beautiful they are??? And the pic of the one survivor. The pics dont show how bad she really is. She is terrified . I asked wtf happened and he said he had her in with THREE roosters . To be honest im not even sure she is mine that i sold him, the only inkling is her comb looks like one in my pics... So she has 2 food bowls, 2 water bowls filled with vitamins, got dewormed, dusted for bugs, and she just keeps eating and drinking. There was no water or food in the containers at his coop that i could see. He gave away all his silkies to now breed lavender orphingtons:(

I think you're doing all the right things and it's great she's eating. That's important when they're trying to overcome their ailment. You could also give her small treats to show her a little happiness. My heart really goes out for silkies because they are more defensless.

She is pooping watery poop like a duck. I tried feeding her mealworms but she is so scared of people its heartbreaking. So i scattered them in the cage for her. She is eating and drinking good so i hope she recovers. Im beyond pissed.

omg Maryellen! I'm so glad that you saved her, I am seriously sitting here crying from looking at those pics. You'll fix her up, I know it. After she's had some settling in time and starts learning to trust you, she'll come around to eating treats from your hand. I just cannot believe the callous, cold hearted, stupidity that some humans display toward animals. I just don't get it. I will never get it. How can people not see that it's a living, breathing, eating, drinking, heart beating, creature? How does that attitude come to be? They are not "things" they are beings. Just because they can't yell at you for abusing them does not mean they deserve less respect and care.
I'm sorry, I am done ranting, it makes me sick to think about how people treat animals.
She'll be okay in your care. It may take some work but you'll do great and she will be grateful. You'll keep us updated, right?

ME - did you report him to animal cruelty? They may not do anything, but if they know about him and there is a next time (sounds like there will be), they may have to act.

Sue he gave away all his chickens so now there is no proof of the conditions. I had to be careful how i approached it as i had to get my hens back( which was nervewracking as if i showed i was mad he would have shut me out) The aspca here only comes out if they will be on tv. Sad but true:(. They take forever to show up and if they dont think they will be on t v they dont show up.ive dealt with them before on cruelty issues ive called about and otgers have called about and they are just horrific assholes. He is friends with the local ACO so i cant even call aco:(
The silkie sneezed twice last night, i dont know if its the shavings or not.
Im so hurt and mad . The deal.was he was to return my hens if anything happened. He treated them worse then livestock .

The guy he gave his silkies to my friend called the aspca on him, she saw how bad his animals were. The aspca gave my friend a hard time about going out there. By the time they went they went after hours and no one was there and they left a card but never followed up. .it took 8 months for the aspca to go to another farm where anmals were dying. People sent them pics of the animals. Once the news station got involved the aspca came out and pumped their chests like they saved the day

I caught her preening , so thats a good sign. She is doing alot of resting, eating and drinking. I dewormed her with albazen friday night. I want to treat her for cocci just in case since her poop is clearish liquid with a bit of green but i also dont want to overload her system. I have probiotics and vitamins in her waters.

That's why I don't sell or give birds/animals away anymore. You never know how they'll be treated.I use to breed Weimaraners but after seeing how one of the puppies lived with a long time friend of Dale's,we quit.To this day,he's 8 now,he has lived his entire life with fleas,no veterinary care or proper feeding though he is as wide as he is tall and is a happy dog. They have money to spend on useless "stuff" but not their utility bills or flea stuff.Last weekend,I gave them 1/2 a bottle of Permectrin II to use on the flea infested dog and house.I bet Dale a $1 this morning they haven't done it yet. When I gave it to them,he claims he can't breathe it and she has to do it.She can't walk, unless there's something she wants, then she can walk fine.I gave them the tools they needed but, dammit,I'm not going over to spray their house, too.I'm having rat problems because of the neighbors.Their chickens live in horrid conditions, aren't fed/watered on a regular basis and they do nothing about the rats, even though their son told me the rats were killing their chickens. So,the rats come here for food/water.I bought a new, different active ingredient poison and got it down everywhere. When I went out with my home made bait traps and bucket of poison, the son wanted to know what I was doing.I told him I was feeding the rats.Stupid questions get stupid answers(he's 18 and could read the words on the bucket). The way some people treat animals is horrid and I don't want to be a part of or contribute to it.We can't save them all but we can love and properly care for our own animals. That's the important part.

I can't deal with a$$holes and animals. I turn it off when its on tv. there's so much that can be done but isn't. most of it can be done low cost., stiffer fines, and licenses to own. licenses for offspring, and stricter euthanasia rules, such as loose, poor condition loose, or poor owner care. we rehome so many animals that its become a standard and makes us enablers, not humane people. no problems get solved. end of rant.

They need more people (employees or volunteers, whatever they are called) to cover more area and more people that ACTUALLY care about making things right and looking after the welfare of animals that are unlucky enough to be homed in a bad place. Like ME has experienced with her ASPCA, to some people, it's just a job, they don't really care. We don't even have an ASPCA around here, the closest animal rights etc organization is 2 hours away. The cops don't care, if you call them, the dispatcher says she'll send someone over but no one ever comes. We don't even have a "dog catcher" here. If there is a stray running loose the police tell you to catch it yourself and take it out to our only shelter. Cats pooping in your garden? not their problem. Sick cat living under your porch, "what do you want us to do about it?" is the response. You take it to the vet and they make you pay whether it's your animal or not and they won't even put it to sleep unless you pay. Who gives a damn if animals are suffering just so long as they get money.
end rant

Yall remember when I went through the same thing with my next door neighbor regarding their chickens. I got the problem resolved by getting city zoning on their butts. ME, I have confidence that you'll get your silkie back to normal in no time. Provide her with plain boiled white rice mixed with buttermilk. It'll help clear up the diarrhea, and buttermilk is a much better probiotic than yogurt.

Thanks Dawg, ill get some buttermilk tomorrow. It just pisses me off people are like this. Im really pissed he wouldnt give them both back to me when they were alive. Im still not sure this one is mine, her comb looks sorta like one of mine but she isnt responding to my chickie chickie call., so either she is so traumatized or she isnt mine. She has no leg feathers and mine both had leg feathers. Im hoping she makes it and when she molts her feathers come back. If they dont im going to have to keep her in the house for winter possibly

I named her Gwen. I also put her with 55 and the 2 month olds. She perked right up and is eating more, drinking and hanging with everyone. I know i shouldnt have, but the change in her is much better now that she is with other chicks. My flock is closed anyway, so no one is leaving. Her and 55 hang together, which is perfect as now 55 has a seeing eye hen
