Hi Everyone, Miss Bennie is about 5 years old and about 3 weeks ago i discovered she had fly strike. I caught it early enough that they had only caused a minor sore on her vent. She went through a course of antibiotics (baytril) but did not eat for 10 days. I supplemented her with Nutri-drench then she started eating again she is still eating but she can not stand. I thought it was because she had lost so much weight and was so weak but the toes on her foot have curled up and she is unable to stand. For the past 4 days I have been giving her a poultry booster that has Vitamin B12 and Vitamin K in it. I am not sure what to do to help her get her strength back. Any suggestions?

Hi. I have only had one with fly strike and she ended up dying of eggyolk peritonitis, where the egg goes into the abdomen instead of out. Their belly gets heavy. I believe that caused the chicken's "odor" and attracted flies to the odor.
She needs to eat. Make her some chicken feed mush and make sure she tastes it. Otherwise, in my very own little opinion she may be dying of natural causes. Hopefully she'll eat and get strength back.
What color is her poop?

I'm so sorry to hear about the problem with your poor chickie. I was JUST reading about fly strike yesterday, what an awful thing. It sounds like she will drink, is that right? If she won't eat the mush that Seminolewind suggested, you could thin it down even further into what I call "brown water", she will still get the nutrients from the feed but it will be more like drinking her food. Try the mush first, if she won't take that, try the brown water. If she will eat plants, try giving her fresh oregano or thyme. Even some fresh peppermint leaves would help.
Good luck!
