I've never been through a hurricane and I don't really want to. Move up here and take the class to be an official storm chaser No, water spouts are not as exciting but still they are something to see. I've been in a couple of dust devil's on the desert in Texas, they are basically baby tornadoes (smaller and not even close in intensity) they don't do any real damage but you can really see how they form and what is happening inside it, how the wind is swirling etc. It is kind of like seeing a tornado from the inside with no actual, real risk. You might get some dirt in your eyes but at least it's not picking you up and flinging you miles away lol! (oh and the dirt hitting your skin isn't really fun either)

Sylie, hurricanes are somewhat predictable and can be tracked. The wind speed is also monitored. So you can mostly board up windows or get out of town. I generally make sure everything is tied down and not in the line of a falling tree if possible. Problem with hurricanes is sustained winds and softening ground by raid. And pack food for loss of power, and fill up on water.
I've been thru 4, 2 in NY. One where the eye passed right over our house. Where I live in Fla, there's been no direct hit in 25-35 years. I've lost a total of 2 trees and a fence and some food. I pray for all of us to not suffer any bodily damage or loss of home. Down here the trailer homes and prefab homes are the ones that get it bad.

yeah, trailers don't do well in the big storms, tornadoes, hurricanes etc. Our trailer has hurricane straps on it set in concrete that goes down about 8 feet. I don't know if that's even enough but hopefully we never find out.

It's raining cats, dogs and chickens out there right now. Reminds me I need to find or buy a chicken feed bucket with a LID! Fortunately I got out there this morning during a drizzle, right now it is coming down HARD.
I do prefer the cooler temperatures, though, and the veggies certainly can use rain.

We were dry, too, but Mother Nature took care of it.We were below normal with rain amounts but I believe the deficit has been corrected. There are actually puddles around the melon and squash mounds,I couldn't do that with a sprinkler going for 30 min or more.

A pea-soup thick 82 degrees F out right now. There were scattered bits of rain earlier today and all that wet is being absorbed up into the atmosphere. Right now an intense layer of sun.
77 degrees F inside. I ended up picking up one of those cheapo weather stations at Home Depot a month or so ago, lets me know if I should open windows or not, although it isn't very good at telling me actual raining or not raining conditions per se. (Windows work great for that!!!) I do get to rely on inside and outdoor temperatures, barometric pressure, and humidity, which works fine for me.
I'd hoped to get geothermal here, but the rebates went away, so while I have propane heat, there's no A/C as of yet. By next year, for sure! I moved to MA while the rest of the immediate family is planning to end up in the Tampa area of Florida, simply because I become totally useless when the temperatures hit the melting point for coconut oil, around 78 degrees F. I like to be outdoors when I can... (And I don't see Florida as being great for homesteading, at least anywhere near Tampa.)
The next two days should be low 70's max, out. I hope they are right!

I don't think Tampa area is so bad for homesteading. Let's talk about further inland and north of Tampa. You don't need much heat. Land is cheap and raising cows is cheap. And veggies grow just about all year, maybe minus a month or two.

Well, our weather has been quite wet the last couple of days thankfully. The garden was starting to look very unhappy, I can hear the tomatoes singing with joy! My friends in England are baking in 94F - not something they see too often...

You also have mud season up there, don't you? Yup - usually early Spring, but we have an extra go round right now...not complaining about the rain.It is still humid but not as bad as it has been. Weather clairvoyant says it will rain all week - time to build an Ark? For chickens only tho'
