I'm happy to report that the sand inside the Brahma's coop did its job! It only took me about 20 seconds or less to remove poop, a real timesaver! I'll keep using shavings in the Brat Pack's coop, it's much larger and besides, they dont eat shavings.

I bought four 50lb sacks of play sand at Lowe's and emptied 2 sacks inside the coop. The sand is wet and I put an oscillating fan in the coop to dry it. I just checked it and the sand is slowly drying. I put the shower curtain in the shed for now. While I was at it, I placed new box fans under the coops in preparation for the hot summer. The first 3 pics are the Brahma coop with sand and box fan set up under the coop. Sand is the best . ME I was thinking kitty litter scoop, LOL. Dawg why fans under the coop?

I use fans to help keep the birds cool on the hot summer days, especially when the air is dead still. Also, there's shade under the coops and that's where they go when it's hot.

I decided yesterday afternoon to go ahead and buy 5 cubic yards of sand before the hot summer begins, not like last year when I melted in the heat and humidity. Besides, both pens need a little 'refreshing.' I'll have plenty of sand leftover and should last for the rest of the year. I'm off to the landscaping place this morning and hoping I can get it delivered next week. My neighbor across the street will help me move the sand from the front yard to the back yard.

Moving the sand-yea good time of year to do it. I am curious about how much cementing my 20x20 foot barn (or maybe sand) with a side walk around it and re cement the pad in front of it. I'd like to see the cost. I do think sand may be the way to go.

I normally dont do much work on Sunday's, but our upcoming week is full of things we have to do. So, I did a full blown coop clean out today. I also dusted all the hens with permethrin. The Light Brahma's were easy to dust, but the Brat Pack... they were a real pain in the neck (and back) to dust, but I got them done and now I'm wore out. I'll be taking a Celebrex tonight for sure.

Maybe you should send me a few Celebrex. But I guess Aleve is fine-if I take it at night. I was up 2 hrs early because my hands and forearms hurt so bad. Too much manual labor and carpal tunnel.

A dump truck delivered the 5 yards of sand this morning, on time too! I got right at it and started loading up the dump trailer. My neighbor showed up about 15 minutes late to help me and I asked him if he was working bankers hours lol. He started laughing and I handed him the shovel while I took a break. We finished moving sand into the main pen. Tomorrow it'll be the smaller pens. I'm going to have plenty of sand left over for the rest of year, maybe even into next year IF it doesnt rain as much as last year. I'll be glad to get this special project done and over with, and grateful for the cool temperatures as well. I'll post a couple pics tomorrow.

Wow. Sand is bad to move with shovels. The only thing that beats the "bad" is red rock gravel. If I get sand in the future, I'll make sure it's easy access and can drop it where it should go.
I guess I'll be doing a major clean out after my silkie goes to heaven.

We put sand in the smaller pens this morning. Out of 5 cubic yards, we moved 2 cubic yards of sand into the pens and have 3 cubic yards leftover. Perfect. All we have to do is move the rest of the sand from the front yard to the back yard and we're doing it tomorrow. Here's a few pics:

I didnt fart around and got all the sand moved to the back yard. I started at 7am and finished at 10am. I also finished some other nitnoid work that needed to be done in one of the coops and a pen...cleaned everything and put it all up and I'm DEAD TIRED and SORE! I know the feeling! I too am one of those that once I get started I just keep going no matter what. Then come in dead and sore. Since ex-hub is out of commission, (can't walk) I know I will have to find help when I need it. There's a lot that I should not even think about doing because it takes me hours . Like moving 10 cubic yards of wood chips . What do you do when you have like 6 projects that all need to be done asap? I seem to go out and just stare at them.
